For leaders

Briefing the board on AI cyber risk

In June 2026 the Five Eyes cyber agencies set out what they want leaders to do about AI. The asks are specific enough to turn into a board paper.

The statement

What the agencies said

The statement says AI "is not a future consideration", and that it is shrinking the window between vulnerability discovery and exploitation [3]. It says breaches will occur, and that preparedness helps organisations contain them and stop them becoming major operational and financial crises [3].

For a board this changes the question. It is no longer whether AI will matter to your risk profile, but whether the organisation can show that its basic controls are working and that someone is accountable for them. The four asks below give a structure for that conversation, and the paper that follows turns them into questions directors can put to management.

Four asks

What leaders are asked to do

  1. 1

Understand and assess risk, readiness and accountability [3].
  2. 2

Prioritise foundational cyber security practices and controls [3].
  3. 3

Empower cyber leaders with authority and resources [3].
  4. 4

Stay engaged as threats and guidance evolve [3].

How fast we can patch

NCSC guidance says defenders have less time to patch [4]. Report your own time to apply critical updates.

What our AI tools can do

Report how many tools are in use and which hold privileged access. The UK survey found about a quarter of AI-using organisations had security practices for AI risks [5].

Whether we can respond

Ask when the incident response plan was last tested [4]. The NCSC guidance advises an assume-compromise mindset with monitoring and defence in depth, so the useful question is how quickly a problem would be noticed and contained, not whether one can be prevented outright [4].

Avoid buying alone

The agencies say success will not come from buying more tools alone [3].

Follow with the defence plan.

How CyPro can help

Need a hand with any of this?

Patching is one job. Keeping a vulnerable system safe until it is patched, and proving it, is several more. CyPro's consultants, testers and SOC analysts can take any of them off your plate.

Scanner checking internet-facing systems for weaknesses

Vulnerability scanning

Find every internet-facing system you run, including the forgotten ones, and see which are still on a vulnerable build.

Cyber security consultants planning hardening work

Hardening and segmentation

Our consultants put the controls in place that limit the damage when something is missed: firewall rules, network isolation and tighter admin access.

Security analysts monitoring systems around the clock

24/7 security monitoring

Our SOC analysts watch your systems day and night for the signs of an attack in progress: unexpected processes, new outbound connections, logins that do not fit.

Know your exposure

Not sure you are protected?

AI makes it quicker to find and use weak points, so it helps to find them first. A penetration test shows which of your internet-facing systems, staff processes and AI tools an attacker could actually use.
