NCSC view

Are AI cyber attacks really a new kind of threat?

Not mostly. The NCSC expects AI to increase the volume and impact of intrusions by improving existing techniques, which is why the basics still matter most.

The judgement

Enhancement, not invention

The NCSC's assessment to 2027 says AI will highly likely increase the volume and impact of cyber intrusions through the evolution and enhancement of existing tactics, techniques and procedures, rather than creating novel threat vectors [1]. Other judgements in the same report are worth knowing:

  • Expect a gap to open between systems that keep up and systems that fall behind [1]
  • Tools built on AI will highly likely widen access to intrusion capability [1]
  • Integrating AI, especially in critical national infrastructure, creates a larger attack surface [1]
  • Weak cyber security will almost certainly give state-linked actors and criminals more chances to misuse AI [1]

Reading it right

What follows for you

Because the methods are familiar, the existing controls remain relevant. The Five Eyes statement says leaders should prioritise foundational practices [3]. What changes is how long you have, and the NCSC says the gap between disclosure and exploitation has shrunk to days [1].

Where it differs

Two genuine shifts

Targets include AI tools

AI systems add a surface that did not exist before. The NCSC says prompt injection may never be fully mitigated [2].

How CyPro can help

Need a hand with any of this?

Patching is one job. Keeping a vulnerable system safe until it is patched, and proving it, is several more. CyPro's consultants, testers and SOC analysts can take any of them off your plate.

Scanner checking internet-facing systems for weaknesses

Vulnerability scanning

Find every internet-facing system you run, including the forgotten ones, and see which are still on a vulnerable build.

Cyber security consultants planning hardening work

Hardening and segmentation

Our consultants put the controls in place that limit the damage when something is missed: firewall rules, network isolation and tighter admin access.

Security analysts monitoring systems around the clock

24/7 security monitoring

Our SOC analysts watch your systems day and night for the signs of an attack in progress: unexpected processes, new outbound connections, logins that do not fit.

Know your exposure

Not sure you are protected?

AI makes it quicker to find and use weak points, so it helps to find them first. A penetration test shows which of your internet-facing systems, staff processes and AI tools an attacker could actually use.
