The numbers

What the UK statistics say about AI and cyber attacks

The government survey gives solid UK figures on breaches and AI adoption. It does not measure how many attacks used AI, and it is worth being clear about that.

Last reviewed against NCSC (UK), NCSC New Zealand and UK Government (DSIT and Home Office). Sources

What it does not show

Limits

The survey counts only breaches and attacks organisations identified and were willing to report, so hidden attacks are likely to be missed [5]. It does not say how many attacks involved AI. Business ransomware fell to 1% from 3% [5], so the headline trend is not a simple rise.

How to use it

Read with care

Use the figures to size the baseline risk and to show the board that AI adoption has run ahead of controls. For direction of travel, use the NCSC's assessment, which expects AI to increase the volume and impact of intrusions [1].

See AI phishing for what to do about the most common attack.

Do not overstate

Do not describe these figures as AI attack numbers. They are all-cause UK figures with a separate measure of AI adoption.

How CyPro can help

Need a hand with any of this?

Patching is one job. Keeping a vulnerable system safe until it is patched, and proving it, is several more. CyPro's consultants, testers and SOC analysts can take any of them off your plate.

Scanner checking internet-facing systems for weaknesses

Vulnerability scanning

Find every internet-facing system you run, including the forgotten ones, and see which are still on a vulnerable build.

Cyber security consultants planning hardening work

Hardening and segmentation

Our consultants put the controls in place that limit the damage when something is missed: firewall rules, network isolation and tighter admin access.

Security analysts monitoring systems around the clock

24/7 security monitoring

Our SOC analysts watch your systems day and night for the signs of an attack in progress: unexpected processes, new outbound connections, logins that do not fit.

Know your exposure

Not sure you are protected?

AI makes it quicker to find and use weak points, so it helps to find them first. A penetration test shows which of your internet-facing systems, staff processes and AI tools an attacker could actually use.
